This process requires a large number of precision genome edits to be made in single cells that can be isolated, grown monoclonally, expanded, and re-edited. While Colossal generates mouse models to test some of these edits, typically the cell lines cultured are non-model organisms that are poorly characterized and require extensive optimization.
